How Many Desserts Per Person? A Party Planning Guide

Plan for 2 to 3 mini desserts per guest, spread across 6 to 12 different dessert types. That's the planning range we use for styled dessert tables across the GTA, and it holds for most weddings, parties, and corporate events. The interesting part is knowing when to move inside that range — here's the math we actually use.

The baseline: 2–3 pieces per guest

Mini-format desserts are the reason dessert tables work: guests try several things without committing to a full slice of anything. At 2 pieces per guest you have a polished after-dinner table; at 3 pieces per guestyou have an abundant spread that stays full in photos taken late in the evening. For a 100-guest wedding, that's 200 to 300 pieces across 6 to 12 dessert types.

When to size up

  • Dessert is the meal's finale — no wedding cake or plated dessert course? The table carries the whole sweet ending. Go to 3 pieces per guest, or a bit past.
  • Long receptions — a table that opens at 7pm and needs to survive until midnight benefits from resilient extras like tarts, cookies, and cake pops.
  • Family-style celebrations — traditional sweet tables are judged on generosity; guests expect to graze more than once and take a few home.

When to size down

  • Dessert follows a heavy plated dinner — 2 per guest is plenty; prioritise variety over volume.
  • Office settings — for breakfast catering or afternoon meetings, 1.5 to 2 pieces per person works, because grazing windows are shorter.
  • A showpiece cake shares the table — when a centrepiece cake from Vava Designer Cakes is being served, count each slice as one of the pieces.

How many types of dessert?

Variety is what makes a table feel curated rather than catered. Our tables typically carry 6 to 12 different dessert types from the signature desserts menu — fewer types styled generously for minimal looks, more types for abundant traditional spreads. Below roughly 50 guests, 6 to 8 types keeps each variety full; above 100 guests, 10 to 12 types keeps repeat visits interesting.

Worked examples

  • 30-guest baby shower: 75 pieces · 6 types · mostly minis with one centrepiece item
  • 100-guest wedding sweet table: 250–300 pieces · 10–12 types · resilient items weighted for the late-night window
  • 60-person office celebration: 120 pieces · 8 types · half desserts, half savoury pastries
